Peter W. Huber

Peter Huber is a lawyer and writer. He earned a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from M.I.T., and served as an Assistant and later Associate Professor at M.I.T. for six years. His law degree is from the Harvard Law School. He clerked on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals for Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and then on the U.S. Supreme Court for Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. He is a Senior Fellow of the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, Partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Kellogg, Huber, Hansen, Todd & Evans, and Chairman of Telecom Policy and Analysis: a Kellogg, Huber Consulting Group.

In this well researched, lively, even witty polemic, Huber recounts the history of telecommunications and its regulation over the last century. The FCC, Huber argues, "should have been extinguished years ago." The Commission has protected monopolies, obstructed efficient use of the airwaves, corrupted common carriage, mispriced services, curtailed free speech, weakened copyright, and undermined privacy. Large, bureaucratic entities like the FCC can never adjust quickly enough to such rapidly changing technologies.

• Local Exchange Competition Under the 1996 Telecom Act: Red-Lining the Local Residential Customer (November 4, 1997). This comprehensive look at competition in local telephony since passage of the 1996 Telecommunications Act has found that there is substantial competition in the local telephone market, but it is all aimed at business customers, because competitors have decided to red-line residential customers.

He writes a regular column published in Forbes.
